Packers & Jets Finally Agree On Aaron Rodgers Trade

by Wisconsin Red April 24, 2023

The New York Jets have agreed to terms to secure Aaron Rodgers, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

The Aaron Rodgers trade had been anticipated for a while, but both the Packers and the Jets had to finally reached an "agreement" before it could be finalized. The Jets will be sending four picks to the Packers, including the 13th and 42nd overall picks in Thursday's draft. In exchange, the Jets will receive Rodgers, the 15th overall pick, and the 170th pick. Rodgers will be forgoing his iconic No. 12 jersey - in respect for Joe Namath - and opting to wear No. 8, the number he wore during his college playing days at Cal.

The trade comes after an offseason of speculation about Rodgers' future with the Packers and his future in the NFL. Rodgers went on highly publicized "darkness retreat" and emerged feeling that the Packers were ready to move on. The Jets were the most obvious trade partner, with a great defense and some promising young offensive players, but a giant hole to fill at quarterback.

The trade clearly wasn't easy for either side to make - with both the Packers & the Jets thinking they had leverage, but were able to get it done. For the Packers, it appeared that once they made the decision to move on from Rodgers, there was no going back. They're hopeful in the progress Jordan Love has made are are willing to give him a chance, and bringing Rodgers back seemingly would have been uncomfortable. The Jets had to make the deal because, frankly, there was no other feasible option. They also hired Nathaniel Hackett as their offensive coordinator and signed receiver Allen Lazard in an obvious move to woo Rodgers.

The irony is not lost that Rodgers was previously stuck in the middle of Brett Favre's retirement indecision and took over the starting job for the Packers when Favre was traded to the Jets. Now, 15 years later, the cycle is repeating itself once again. The Packers are officially moving on from Rodgers, a four-time MVP and arguably the greatest player in their franchise history. The Jets, on the other hand,  are hoping the trade can lead them to Super Bowl contention. With the trade finally done, both teams look forward to moving on to their new eras.
